Pronounced "Humz-haff", the village of Humshaugh is a great base from which to explore the historic and scenic Hadrian's Wall region. From here, it is just a short walk through the neighbouring village of Chollerford, to Chesters Roman Fort, an extensive and interesting ruin.

There are a couple of privately owned B&Bs in the village, whilst classic pub grub is served at the traditional Crown Inn.

Chollerford Bridge Over the River North Tyne

The scenic village of Chollerford is superbly situated for exploring the countryside around Hadrian's Wall and for delving into its rich history. The nearby Chesters Roman Fort is a good place to start.

The Battle of Heavenfield, between the Northumbrians and the Welsh, took place near here in around 633, resulting in a victory for the Northumbrians. A stone cross marks the site to the east.

The village occupies a lovely spot on the banks of the North Tyne River and its stoned arched bridge is the main landmark. There are a few amenities by the river, such as the Riverside Kitchen (an ideal lunch spot), the George Hotel and Chesters Bridge B&B.

Chesters Roman Fort

Highlight • Monument

Known as Cilurnum by the Romans, Chesters was once an important cavalry fort. Built in AD 124, it housed some 500 cavalrymen and later was also home to infantry. Soldiers stationed here regularly carried out retaliatory raids into the disputed lands beyond Hadrian's Wall. The site was occupied until the Romans departed Britain in the 5th century.

Humshaugh War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

This 17-foot (5.2 m) obelisk memorial, to the west of the village of Humshaugh, pays tribute to those who lost their lives during the First World War. The inscription reads: 'In memory of those who fell in the Great War'. It was erected here in February 1920 and has since been amended to also pay tribute to those who died during the Second World War.
