Piel Island can be found just beyond Roa Island in Morecambe Bay. It's around 20,000 hectares (50 acres) in size, and you can get there using a ferry from here. At low tide you could also take a guided walk over to Piel Island (note - it's unsafe to do so without a guide with local knowledge as the sands can be very dangerous).

Roa Island

Highlight • Beach

Tethered to the mainland in 1847 by the building of a causeway, Roa Island still maintains its island feel and has around 100 permanent inhabitants. The cafe makes for a great lunch spot during an amble along the coast. From here you can catch a ferry to Piel Island, with its spectacular castle ruins.

Roosecote Sands

Highlight • Natural

A marvellous place for birdwatching thanks to the number of rock protrusions, making for excellent roosting sites. Along with nearby area Walney Nature Reserve and Cavendish Dock, this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The vibrant wildlife and geology of the mudflats, saltmarshes, lagoons and shingle make it a dynamic place to walk alongside. For your own safety and the preservation of the habitats, stick to the paths and roads at all times.
