Horstmar Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

During ground-penetrating radar measurements, experts from the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) discovered, among other things, the remains of a mighty tower, the keep (Bergfried). This round tower probably stood freely in the castle courtyard. With a height of 25 meters and an outer diameter of about 14 meters, it was among the larger examples of such towers, which formed the core of every castle from the 12th to the 15th century.

The Horstmar Castle was the seat of the noble lords of Horstmar, first documented in 1092. In 1269, the lordship of Horstmar, along with the castle, was sold to the Münster Cathedral Chapter. The castle now became the center of the episcopal office and the judicial district of Horstmar. Expanded from the 15th century as a border fortress against the County of Steinfurt, it remained a favorite residence of the Bishops of Münster until the 16th century. According to written tradition, the castle at this time consisted of a high tower, a chancellery, a residential wing with rooms for the territorial lord and officials, a prison tower, and various ancillary buildings, including a construction and brewery house, a bakehouse, and stables.
During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed in 1635 on the orders of the Hessian Lieutenant Rabenhaupt. The last above-ground remains were likely dismantled in the 18th century.

Here too please 🙏. The photos belonging to the highlights are okay but the photos of the road or the meadow have nothing to do with the highlight (here the castle). You can also delete photos that have nothing to do with the highlight ☝️. For info: See the Komoot rules.

Schlosstor Horstmar

Highlight • Historical Site

From the town hall, Schlossstrasse leads to the last remaining city gate, the Schlosstor, which forms a structural unit with the Sendenhof, one of the eight former castle courts. The Schlosstor is designed in the style of a gate tower. The passageway consists of a very strong pointed arch, which was often used by the architects of the 15th century.
This gate is particularly remarkable because it is the only one of its kind that has survived in the surrounding area. There must have been a large number of similar towers in all fortified towns. The Sendenhof adjoins this tower seamlessly. At this point it is clearly visible how closely the castle guards were tied to the defense of the city. On the north side you can still clearly see the connection between the gate and the castle court. On the sides of the street we find strong stone walls. With these the noble castle guards separated themselves from their bourgeois neighbors.

Sendenhof Burgmannshof, Horstmar

Highlight • Historical Site

The Sendenhof is one of four remaining Burgmannshöfen in Horstmar. Burgmannshöfe were once built in cities with the character of a fortress, mostly on or next to larger castles. The name Sendenhof goes back to the first known owner in 1366, Albert von Sende.
