Berkhamsted WWI Training Trenches

Highlight • Natural Monument

During WWI, Berkhamsted was used by troops to train for trench life on the continent. They would live in a nearby tented camp, stand parade on Kitchener’s Field, and trained on Berkhamsted and Northchurch Commons. These were officers from the Inns of Court Officers Training Corp., otherwise known as The Devil’s Own. These officers dug 13 miles of trenches here in training for the real thing that they would shortly face opposite enemy lines. These days there is an information board here, a memorial, and of course the trenches.

Bridgewater Monument

Highlight • Monument

This Tower was built in memory of Francis Egerton, who was the Third Duke of Bridgewater. Egerton was an expert in inland navigation. He was involved in the construction of the Bridgewater Canal (joining Worsley and Manchester), which is the first modern British canal. He also built the canal joining Liverpool and Manchester. Not only that, but he made 2 million pounds out of these adventures and ventures.

Be sure to walk up to the top of the Tower. The views from up there are tremendous.

A mix of gravel and rugged hiking trails on this route. It's on the Ashridge Boundary Trail, just beyond Moneybury Hill and its ancient barrow.

Clipper Down Woodland Path

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a densely wooded area with wonderful views. A good rest spot for brewing up a cup of tea or coffee as it's well sheltered.

Ivinghoe Beacon

Highlight • Summit

Standing at 764 feet (233 m), Ivinghoe Beacon towers over the surrounding countryside. Offering views of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire, it’s named after the fires that were once lit at the summit for navigation and communication. Due to the wind blowing up the hill, you'll often see model aircraft enthusiasts engaged in 'slope soaring' when the weather is good.

Red Cedar Woods Path

Great woodland area to include on a trip to this area. Vastly different to the exposed hills and fields surrounding it.

Golden Valley, Ashridge Estate

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

The Golden Valley is one of the finest areas of the Ashridge Estate and is a nod to its aristocratic past. Originally not a valley at all, this feature was built by celebrated landscape architect 'Capability' Brown between 1759-1768 to highlight the impressive grounds of Ashridge House. Due to the sloping and gentle bends at first glance it looks like the valley goes on endlessly, when in reality it only stretches a short distance.
