Tjenneboom Monument

Highlight • Monument

The name "Tjenne" refers to a certain Johanna Machiels from Helshoven, who was accused of witchcraft in 1665 and sentenced to death in 1667 after a two-year trial. Her sentence was announced at the foot of a huge linden tree at a crossroads of the four municipalities of Helshoven, Gotem, Mettekoven and Voort.
Johanna Machiels was burned at the stake a few hundred meters away, on the highest point of the hill.

Helshoven Chapel and Hermitage

Highlight • Religious Site

As early as the middle of the 13th century, the hamlet of Helshoven was a regional place of pilgrimage where Our Lady of Peace was venerated.
The Helshoven Chapel, located on the old Roman road, was founded in 1254. A hermitage was later added.
The last hermit died in 1908.
The current chapel dates from 1659.
In front of the chapel there is a sculpture of Pope John Paul II.

Floating Chapel of Helshoven

Highlight • Monument

At the highest point of Helshoven, you can now enjoy a breathtaking view over the Haspengouw landscape. Artist Frits Jeuris has created a unique work of art from dozens of felled fruit trees from the area.

“Helsh(ea)ven”, a wooden work of art consisting of 90 standard cherry trees, each fifty years old, was hit by the cherry plague virus at the end of 2016, a contagious plant disease that causes small fruits on cherries. Now the felled trees are getting a second life. The work of art symbolizes the dynamic landscape of Haspengouw.

Tumulus of Brustem

Highlight • Historical Site

The tumulus of Brustem is a burial mound and for that reason alone deserves respect. Once there, during the 2nd century AD. people commemorated their deceased. In 1992, the then Provincial Gallo-Roman Museum completely restored the site of the tumulus. Management works were carried out, information boards and a picnic bench were installed. A maintenance agreement was concluded with the city of Sint-Truiden. Today nothing remains of that. While in 2019 the tumulus, although very neglected, was still accessible, the access is currently completely barricaded with wood. Heritage care in Flanders, even of centuries-old grave monuments, is often a very painful story.
