St Michael and All Angels Church, Berwick

Highlight • Historical Site

St Michael & All Angels is a Grade I-listed church set in peaceful countryside on the outskirts of Berwick. The flint-built church dates to the 13th century but was restored in 1856. Inside, you can view a series of 20th-century mural paintings by Bloomsbury artists, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell. These extensive murals cover the nave walls, chancel arch, screen and pulpit.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to erect “their” cross at this spot. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and aims to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our lives, just as it was part of Jesus’ life.
So I hope that many people... will visit the wayside crosses, whether as places of silence and breathing before God, whether as places of community gathering, prayer and praise of God.”

Alfriston Village

Highlight • Settlement

Alfriston is a village community surrounded by the Wealden South Downs. We sit near the eastern end of the South Downs Way where this national path splits three ways, going east, west and south, from the very centre of our historic village.

Around the village, visitors can enjoy the famous St Andrew's church (the "Cathedral of the South Downs"), the clergy house (the National Trust's first property) and our wide range of galleries, cafés, pubs and shops.
