Waux-hall Park

Highlight • Natural

Waux-hall or Wauxhall is the name of a landscape park with a restaurant in Mons in the Belgian province of Hainaut, located outside the city center.
The name is derived from Vauxhall. It concerns a landscape park of 5 hectares, which was designed by the landscape architect Louis Fuchs. The garden was created at the request of a number of wealthy citizens between 1862-1864. Originally it was a private park, later it became a public park.
The park has an arboretum that contains some notable species such as the black walnut (Juglans nigra), the Byzantine hazel and a weeping lime and some very old trees.
There are also two ponds and lawns with hundreds of thousands of bulb plants. There are also statues from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Byzantine hazel in the park.
The tavern (Le pavillon principal), was designed by Joseph Hubert in guingette style. It is built on top of a fortress built by the Dutch after 1815 and which was part of the Dutch fortifications of the city of Bergen.
In 1892 the park became the property of the city of Bergen and you can find leisure activities such as tennis courts, a jogging track, rowing courses, playgrounds, a fitness room, et cetera.

Spanish House

Highlight • Monument

The Spanish House is a building of Gothic tradition dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, heavily restored at the beginning of the 20th century. It rises on three levels in brick and stone clearly individualized by drip lines. The street facade is pierced on the ground floor by two preformed bays with crosses or crosses from the 16th century, while the first floor is illuminated by three bays from the 17th century. A narrow window with a lowered arch and a wooden cross is distinguished from the other windows by the original tiled threshold. Similar openings, without crossing, characterize the last level. The similar side facade is narrower and the rear facade, which faces the Rampe du Château, has only two levels. The house is covered with a gable roof with a fairly steep slope and is mainly bordered by a stepped gable.

The building attached to the Spanish house is a 17th century brick structure, which was converted in the 19th century. The cross-section bays under lowered arches also have tiled sills. This building is clad with an outbuilding of the same type. The forecourt preceding these two buildings is closed by a low wall pierced by two doors made of recycled materials. The latter are surmounted by an acclaimed lintel where, to the right, silent shields and clover fleuron take place beneath a bay of mirrors.

Belfry of Mons

Highlight • Monument

Large in size (87 meters), large in its history (it has resisted wars and epidemics for centuries), and large in what it releases. The only baroque style belfry in Belgium, recognized by UNESCO since 1999, it is a remarkable architectural vestige.

It is also a museum, accessible from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mons Grand Place

Highlight • Historical Site

Mons is called mountains in Dutch. Like many cities with a Flemish-influenced history, there is a Grote Markt or Grand-Place with an impressive bell tower in the city center. The Belfry of Mons was built in the 17th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another eye-catcher in the historic center is the late Gothic town hall from the 15th century.
