Tokyo Imperial Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

Today's Imperial Palace (皇居, Kōkyo) is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park in the center of Tokyo surrounded by moats and massive stone walls, just a few minutes' walk from Tokyo Station. It is the residence of the imperial family of Japan.
Edo Castle was once the seat of the Tokugawa shogun that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867. In 1868, the shogunate was overthrown, and the country's capital and imperial residence were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. In 1888 the construction of a new imperial palace was completed. The palace was destroyed in the Second World War and then rebuilt in the same style.

Kitahanebashimon Gate

Highlight • Monument

During the Edo period, a bridge currently leading from Kitanomaru Park to this gate on the north side of the Tokyo Imperial Palace used to be a drawbridge. Subsequently, it gave the name to the Kitahanebashimon (literally "Northern Drawbridge Gate") which forms part of the enceinte surrounding the inner part of the castle – Honmaru.

The gate is constructed as a Masugata (square gate) and has a double-storied gateway. It consists of two parts, both of which are single-section. The first, outer part of the gate, is dark gray with one canopy. The second, internal one, has three canopies, two of which have a decorative function. Back in the day, the gate's second level was used by defenders of the fortress.

Once you're at the main train station, it's not far and the detour here is worth it.

Tokyo Imperial Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

Huge queues, especially on weekends. I'm talking about hundreds of people piled up in front of me at the baggage security check. I didn't go in so I only saw it from the outside, but the external walk is very beautiful!

Wadakura Fountain Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

A small park east of the Imperial Palace. Wadakura Fountain Park was opened in 1961 to commemorate the wedding of the imperial couple and was renovated in 1995 to celebrate the wedding of the Crown Prince and Princess. The design is very modern - concrete with fountains, narrow water channels and waterfalls. There is also a cafe and a restaurant. It is best to visit it in the evening when the park and fountains are illuminated.
