Kreuzstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

According to legend, the rock on which the cross stands was thrown from the Jainzenberg into the Traun by the devil. Satan wanted to dam the Traun and drown the pious people of Ischl. After he had already thrown the first chunk into the Traun, the Ave bell rang from the Church of St. Nicholas. This broke Satan's power and he had to leave.

Investigations by the geologist Dr. Harald Lobitzer, however, revealed that this striking boulder is not a block from the Plassen limestone of the Jainzen but rather a glacial “boulder” made from Dachstein reef limestone. It probably came to our region from the Dachstein area on the back of an ice stream from the Traun glacier during the last ice age.

Weißenbach Valley Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

You cycle through the wonderful Weißenbachtal on well-developed paths. The rushing of the stream of the same name is always nice in the ears.

In summer, there are many cyclists and also many drivers on the main road around Lake Attersee. The level of mutual acceptance sometimes leaves something to be desired. It is best to cycle early in the morning or outside of rush hour.
