Landmarks are witnesses of the past and are subject to legally anchored protection. These cultural assets form valuable historical sources and must be preserved from being forgotten. Since 2008, the cantonal monument preservation department has been compiling a continuously updated inventory of the historical boundary stones in the canton of Zurich. Unfortunately, improvements, tractors, but also ignorance make many valuable landmarks disappear. Embedded under the boundary stones, “witnesses”, such as roof tiles, often show the exact position of the boundary stone in the event that the boulder should move.

In 1470 there were six provincial bailiffs and 17 upper bailiffs in the subject areas in which Zurich exercised both state sovereignty and judicial authority, to which more were added later. Herrliberg belongs to the Obervogtei Küsnacht. The bailiwicks exist until 1798.

The “Grosse Grüningerstein” is a boulder, around 180 cm long and around 130 cm wide. It protrudes about 100 cm from the ground. The letters M, GN and K (Obervogtei Meilen, Landvogtei Grüningen, Obervogtei Küsnacht) and the lines of the border are chiseled. This “three-congregation boundary stone” at the meeting of the three old borders stands above the path near the current three-congregation boundary point Herrliberg / Egg / Meilen.
