Velika Planina

Highlight • Settlement

Velika Planina, literally "large pasture", is an idyllic karst plateau north east of Kamnik, at an average altitude of 1500 m. It is the largest shepherds' village in Europe today, as well as one of the few preserved in the high mountains. The main settlement includes more than 140 huts characterized by the typical circular-shaped architecture and long roofs covered with fir boards. A cultural heritage that represents one of the major attractions in the heart of Slovenia. The fastest way to reach this fairytale place is to take the old cable car that leaves from Kamniska Bistrica, just 3 km from the end of the homonymous valley. Open all year round, it costs € 17 per person round trip, with a supplement of another € 2 for the chair lift that leads to Gradisce (1666 m), the highest point of Velika Planina. A visit to Velika Planina is particularly recommended in early spring, when the crocus flowering creates one of the most spectacular natural events in Europe.

The chapel was at the end of 2 st. war burned. All years after the war, efforts were made to restore the chapel on Velika planina. After many years of efforts to obtain permits, an action to restore the chapel took place in early May 1988. For the first-day holidays, the foundations were excavated, and after three months the chapel was ready for blessing. There was no man who would not be willing to help with the renovation. On the same day, when the chapel was blessed, they were transferred from the Holy Sepulcher to the procession. She sees a picture of Maria Snezna, which was stored there since the end of the war. On 7 August, the chapel was blessed by the Archbishop of Dr. Alojzij Šuštar before more than 6,000 people.

Seeing the many wooden huts on Velika Planina is quite an experience, so it's worth a visit even in moderate weather.

September 10, 2024,🇸🇮Velika Planina – Mala Planina; Kamnic (Steiner) Alpen
Today it was beautiful again, so we hiked the Velika Planina. That's basically Hobbit land in Slovenian. A lovely high alpine pasture with lots of extremely relaxed free-roaming cows, alpine huts that are worthy of a museum, and in the background either lush, wooded valleys or the Steiner Alps.
You can take the lift up, but it's nicer to hike …

One of the famous attraction of Slovenia, i avoided to take the lift and parked on the other side of the planina, the elevation to reach the plateau is not that much. The loop is more or less indicated, and i really appreciated all the boards installed along the trail with helpful explanations. I liked this hike, i was on …
Don't trust the speed, there is surely a mistake.

I'll let the pictures do the talking! We have often been to an alpine pasture, but not to an entire alpine village. A great piece of earth, to be found just below the clouds! Visit, take your time, be amazed, listen to the bells of the cows, taste sour cream, try to swing into the clouds, take detours, preferably stay …

Day 6
Today we planned a hike across the Velika Planina plateau. The weather was good for hiking and we were well prepared with some warmer clothing, which we could change into if necessary. The journey was almost 70 kilometers, like the last one, and quite long. Unfortunately, driving is unavoidable here. The valley station is in Kamniška Bistrica, parking …
