Apple Orchards of Meckenheim

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

On this section of the Rhenish Apple Route you cycle through impressively large apple orchards. No wonder, you are in the largest fruit and vegetable growing area in North Rhine-Westphalia. Especially beautiful to look at in the spring when the apples are in bloom, but of course also in late summer and autumn when the fruits are ripe.

Between Kottenforst and Rhine you can cycle wonderfully between the orchards and fields and enjoy a fantastic view of the Siebengebirge on the other bank of the Rhine.

Hunter's Hut in the Kotten Forest

Highlight • Historical Site

The hunter's house is 150 meters away from the most impressive tree in the whole of Kottenforst. It served as a relay station during the par force hunt and you could change horses here, for which a horse stable was located in addition to the lounge. Today the small building is a listed building. The regional forest authority Rhein-Sieg-Erft restored it and has been using it ever since.

Kottenforst station

Highlight • Restaurant

You can drink or eat here in the shade on hot days. I would, however, only go to this restaurant for a drink or ice cream, because with so many guests in summer it is difficult (for the operator) to spend more time with the guests. So I would not compare the quality of the food with that of a hotel.

Beautiful and relaxing. Cycling through apple and fruit orchards in the best weather. Easy to ride with a good level of fitness and experience of long distances. The side loops of the apple route also offer great cycling fun and are just as good as the main route.
