Historic Center of Gubbio

Highlight • Historical Site

Gubbio is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in the world, built entirely of stone and beautifully preserved. Founded by the Umbrian people with the name of Ikuvium, it soon became one of the most important religious and political centers in the area. Under the dominion of the Romans the importance of Gubbio increased again as demonstrated by the ruins of finely decorated patrician villas and by the presence of an imposing Roman theater. The Roman city was destroyed by the Goths and it will be necessary to wait until the 13th century before its fortunes rise again. The present urban aspect and some of the most important buildings such as the cathedral, the Palazzo dei Consoli and the Palazzo del Podestà are due to this period.

Church of San Giovanni Battista (Gubbio)

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of St. John the Baptist is a beautiful and welcoming church located in the Piazza San Giovanni of the same name. It is definitely worth a visit, not least because it became very famous through the cinema and television, as it was the fictional parish of Don Matteo. Terence Hill played the priest “Don Matteo” in the small Italian town of Gubbio. Don Matteo is friends with the carabiniere Antonino Cecchini. He receives regular information about current criminal cases that are being handled by the Gubbio carabinieri. To the displeasure of the carabinieri, Don Matteo always solves the criminal cases a little faster than the carabinieri themselves.

Saint Ubaldo Gate

Highlight • Historical Site

The Porta di Sant’Ubaldo is one of the main ancient access gates to the medieval city. Built to protect the road to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, it represents a historical passage linked to the traditions of Gubbio. The gate offers a suggestive view and is a privileged starting point for the climb to Mount Ingino, where the famous Corsa dei Ceri takes place every year. Its imposing arch and the surrounding walls testify to the importance of defense and religiosity in the history of the city.
