Nordbahn Trail, Wuppertal

Highlight • Cycleway

"In a wide loop we approach the Nordbahntrasse, which then carries us sixteen kilometers back to Vohwinkel. High above the roofs of the city of Wuppertal, along between them and below, through wonderful and sometimes wondrously illuminated tunnels.
98% asphalt with almost the same amount of urban character, this can be said about the route, and therefore just right in this beastly weather.
And finally and "actually" it's always primarily about hiking together.
And it works well, even in the rain.

"The Rhenish Railway Line (Northern Railway)
On September 15, 1879, the "Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft" opened the railway line from Düsseldorf via Neanderthal, Mettmann, Hahnenfurth, Elberfeld, Barmen, Gevelsberg, Hagen to Dortmund-Hörde. It thus competed with the Bergisch-Märkische railway company. Both routes ran parallel in Wuppertal, often just a few hundred meters apart. Only in 1896 was a connection between the two routes between Vohwinkel and Lüntenbeck built.
The "Rhenish line", popularly known as the "Northern Railway", ran in Wuppertal through the northern areas of the districts of Vohwinkel, Elberfeld and Barmen. In the Wuppertal area it had five tunnels and four viaducts and was considered a scenic route with numerous beautiful views of the Wupper valley. In the Vohwinkel area there was until recently the "Dornap-Hahnenfurth" station and the "Wuppertal-Lüntenbeck" stop for passenger services. The lime works in the Dornaper area in particular used the route intensively to transport their goods.”
(wuppertal-vohwinkel.net/6-eisenbahn/rheinische.htm)

A special highlight of the route is based on the private historical fact that KC once took the rail bus from Mettmann to Wuppertal-Heubruch to school here; Today we walk along the mostly track-free route past the small train stations whose names he still knows inside out."

Almost 200 square meters of space, including equipment, will soon be available on the route, right next to the bridge over Düsseldorfer Strasse. For this purpose, the old platform will be lowered and a fall protection surface will be laid. The Wichernhaus will do the preparatory work. The system costs a total of almost 75,000 euros.

May 17, 2025,Mal eben dem Schwiegersohn zum Geburtstag gratulieren...
Today, a "walk" to visit my daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law, who just turned 28 (my goodness—how long ago that was?!).

Quick check to see if the path to Otto-Hausmann-Ring is clear again—on my last walk here, I had to squeeze through a construction fence!

Everything's back to normal.
