Kleinbahn Bridge over the Küstenkanal

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge has been completely renewed since June 2022 and is now connected to the road south of the Coastal Canal via a convenient ramp that is not too steep.

Kleinbahn Trail Edewecht

Highlight • Trail

Because the municipality of Edewecht in what was then the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was not connected to the rail network when the railways were built until the beginning of the twentieth century, the municipal council tried to establish its own connection to the Oldenburg–Leer main railway in Zwischenahn. On January 8, 1910, the Oldenburg State Ministry approved the construction.

Construction and operation were transferred by the municipality to the Grand Ducal Oldenburg State Railway. The construction costs were estimated at 429,000 marks. The Grand Duchy gave a subsidy of 130,000 marks; the community had to finance the rest itself. On December 15, 1912, operations opened on the standard-gauge, single-track railway, which was seven kilometers long. It was primarily intended to transport peat, which was also used as fuel for locomotives at the time, and to transport livestock.

With a scale, they weighed things🫣😁😎

The peat railways, also known as field railways, used special wagons designed for transporting peat. These wagons were often long and had a large wheelbase to ensure a high load-bearing capacity. The car bodies could be removable and were lifted from the chassis using chain lugs and then transferred, for example, with a crane.

Double-flanged wheels were common because the tracks in the bog often couldn't be laid securely, and the wheels were designed to prevent derailment.

Shady rest area with information about the small railway and "museum"

Railway lines have always been built without curves and gradients and this makes cycling very easy. The route, which is just over ten kilometers long, is completely asphalted and you often pass houses with great gardens right on the route!
Watch out for oncoming traffic, it can get tight.☝️

Ekerner Mill

Highlight • Monument

Very nice well-kept old windmill. It's not just the color that sets it apart from the others.

The windmill in the open-air museum in Bad Zwischenahn is a two-story gallery Dutch mill. It dates from 1811 and was initially built in neighboring Westerstede.

After repeated changes of ownership, its last location was in Hüllstede, near Westerstede. There, after it was decommissioned in 1958, it threatened to decay and was moved to the open-air museum in Bad Zwischenahn in 1960 for preservation.

The mill has a functional grinding mill for crushing grain and a roller mill used for oil production.

The wings of the mill are 11.20 meters long, and the total height of the mill to the cap ridge is 21 meters.

The tour was supposed to be recorded as one trip... but somehow that turned off in Bad Zwischenahn 🤷‍♂️.
Well, you can't put them together either... right?

That was a great bike ride. The Kleinbahnweg runs for almost half of the entire route. The entire route was easy to drive. I can only recommend.

Showing Translation

Had to take the two "detours" because the cycle path across the coastal canal was closed (06/18/22). Otherwise, of course, via the "Kleinbahnradweg" to the Zwischenahner Meer.
