Heppenheimer Steinkopf Viewing Platform

Highlight • Viewpoint

Great viewing point with all kinds of information boards about the vineyards and geology. From the viewing point, when the weather is clear, you have a really great view of Heppenheim, Bensheim and Mannheim and also Ludwigshafen. Simply beautifully designed.

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter is often called the "Cathedral of the Bergstrasse" because of its size, but it was never the seat of a bishop. There is documentary evidence of a parish church dedicated to St. Peter as early as 755, in the oldest document mentioning Heppenheim. The current neo-Gothic church was built between 1900 and 1904 on the site of a previous building. The six lower floors of the current north tower (probably built between the beginning of the 12th and the middle of the 13th century) were incorporated into the new building. The crucifixion group in front of the church was created in 1705 by the Aschaffenburg sculptor Anton Wermerskirch. The client was the Amtskeller (financial administrator) Johann Mackard.

In good weather you have beautiful views on and over Heppenheim on the way. Then there is the cathedral, which can be seen from above in its beauty.

Starkenburg

Highlight • Castle

The Starkenburg stands on the 295 meter high Schlossberg and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. The fort was built in the middle of the 11th century as protection for the Lorsch Abbey. Until 1765, the castle provided protection for the monks and inhabitants of the southern mountain road, after which it was abandoned. The castle decayed over time and only at the beginning of the 20th century began restoration work. Several parts of the building had to be blown up due to dilapidation. Among other things, the old keep was blown up and replaced by a new building. Today, only a few of the old buildings are left, most buildings are new or replicas. In the castle today is a youth hostel and a nice Burgschänke. Here you can visit the castle courtyard, the keep and parts of the defensive wall.

One of the numerous Bismarck towers that was erected as monuments for the founder of the empire around the turn of the century throughout Germany. The tower on the Hemsberg is 19 meters high and was built by the Odenwald Club, which still maintains and operates it today. In summer, the tower is open on Sundays and public holidays. Next to the viewing platform, you can also visit the small café.
