Fortified church Ostheim vor der Rhön

Highlight • Historical Site

Fortified church built around 1400! In 1634, the fortified church was conquered by "Croats" and "Imperial troops" in the Thirty Years' War. St. Michael was built in 1619 and has been the Protestant town church ever since. Tours can be booked through the tourist office. It's worth it!!!

Streu River

Highlight • River

The name Streu was written in the 8th century "Steuue" and around the year 1030 "Strouua". It is derived from the Lithuanian word strove, which means strong current. The river gave the municipalities Oberstreu and Heustreu and the village Mittelstreu their names.

The litter rises in the Thuringian part of the Rhön, southeast of the mountain Ellenbogen. It flows roughly in a north-south direction. From the source the river runs first in a south-easterly direction over the state border to Bavaria to the city of Mellrichstadt. There the Streu changes its course and flows about 10 km in a south-westerly direction until it flows into the somewhat smaller Franconian Saale, a right tributary of the Main, at the municipality of Heustreu.

On a map from 1621, the entire course of the river to Gemünden bears the name "Straÿ Flu" (Streu River).

Ostheim vor der Rhön Historic Town Center

Highlight • Historical Site

In the middle of the idyllic valley of the litter lies the half-timbered town Ostheim that you may not yet know, but certainly one of its products. From Ostheim comes the well-known Bionade - maybe a little inspiration for the right drink for a rest in Ostheim. But beyond that, the little town has a lot to offer. For example, the largest "fortified church" of Germany. But there are also very practical highlights here. Like the varied gastronomy with delicious Rhöner cuisine. Or the wide range of accommodation that has something for every taste and budget. At least you should not be bored here;)

Medieval city wall. Well received. Mostly not accessible because of private property.

The gate bridge is one of the oldest preserved structures in Ostheim. It was built in 1609 as a two-lane bridge with four round arches and two mighty central pillars with pointed icebreaker attachments. The ravages of time had noticeably gnawed at her. Renovation work was now necessary to keep the bridge safe for traffic. Immediately after the Ostheim city festival, the building was closed to traffic. The local construction company Stiel, which has also been carrying out renovation work on the Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg for several years, was awarded the contract for the repair. A lot of injection mortar was needed to close the internal cavities and joints. In the course of the complete grouting of the stone blocks, damaged stones in the vault were replaced and extensive landings in front of, under and after the bridge were removed with excavators so that the litter can flow through all four arches again even at low tide. A flat wall of natural stones was placed around the bridge piers to relieve them during floods. For safety reasons, a railing had to be attached. At the request of the water management office, a terrace was built downstream with the help of large mussel limestone blocks, which ensures more oxygen in the water and thus benefits the fish population.
