Completed in 1960 at about 5miles this is the longest causeway in the Outer Hebrides. It connects Gramisdale in Benbecula and Carinish in North Uist.
It's amazing riding across these causeways, with incredible views and a wild feeling. Watch out for bad weather though as you're very exposed.

North Uist Causeway

Highlight • Bridge

Opened in 1960, the causeway joins Benbecula with North Uist. Before it was built, you could cross by boat at high tide or by foot at low tide, but the former was treacherous in poor weather and the latter required a a guide to show you where the safe route was. It is a glorious feeling to pedal between the two islands with the sea on either side.

Loch Bi (Loch Bee)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The largest loch in South Uist, Loch Bi (otherwise known as Loch Bee) is a beautiful stretch of water connected by the sea on both sides through a collection of lochans and creeks. The causeway here was one of the oldest in Scotland, originally built in the 17th century to allow horse and cart to cross the island.

Loch Druidibeg Nature Reserve

Highlight • Viewpoint

This beautiful nature reserve's moorland contrasts starkly with the vibrant machair found elsewhere on South Uist. The reserve is home to a variety of ground nesting bird species, including hen harriers, skylarks and merlins. You might also spot a few wild ponies on your travels and, if you're really lucky, a sea eagle or two. There are also lovely views towards Beinn Mhòr, Hacla and Beinn Tairbert.

South Uist

Highlight • Natural Monument

Pristine beaches, hidden coves and untouched nature sum up South Uist, the second-largest island of the Outer Hebrides. With a population of less than 2,000, you will find plenty of secluded spots where you can enjoy the spectacular scenery. Interestingly, the island is the only place in the UK where prehistoric mummies were found. It is also one of the last remaining strongholds of the Gaelic language.
