Peak Alum Works ruins

Highlight • Monument

At this site of an old alum factory, The National Trust and Heron Recreation have put up display boards about the works. Alum is not exactly aluminium, by the way! - but rather potassium aluminium sulphate. Until the 19th century, it was used by the textile industry in the process of dyeing clothes.

Boggle Hole

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Bogglehole YHA. What a brilliant little place this is, hidden away from the chaos of all the nearby coastal towns with a private cove, cafe, and accommodation available. A must see to appreciate this gem of a place.

The end of the coast to coast walk. It is a great place to finish, full of life and plenty of places for a well earned pint.

View of Robin Hood's Bay Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

At the top of these cliffs is a fantastic coastal path with views as far as the eye can see and a couple of benches to sit on and take it all in. At the right time of year there are always plenty of birds to spot too.

View of Robin Hood's Bay

Highlight • Viewpoint

Great view across Robin Hood's Bay, both out to sea and of the beach and village. This view point is on the England Coast path trail & the Cleveland Way national trail.

The cinder track is the route of the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line. The railway operated from 1885 to 1965. The tracks are gone now but the trail left behind is smooth, flat, well maintained and offers stunning views, especially at the Robin Hood's Bay end. It's a great alternative to the coast path making an obvious run loop from Whitby or Robin Hood's Bay and back.

Robin Hood's Bay Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling. Robin Hood’s Bay is reputed to have a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. It was a hub during the late 18th century, as smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast.

Today, it's a busy tourist hub in summer and start of the coast-to-coast walking path. The origin of the village’s name is uncertain, but it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village.

When taking a detour into the village, be aware that you will have to negotiate a 31% incline on the way back.
