Merckenburg Castle or Heukelum Castle, dates from the 13th century. The castle was destroyed twice and rebuilt twice. The first destruction took place in the 14th century. The second time was in 1672 when the French razed more castles in our country. The castle was also rebuilt using medieval materials. Around 1700 the castle had risen from its ashes again. The Merkckenburg is a heavy square building, oriented to the west, on the town of Heukelum. It is located in the middle of a wide canal. On the west side is the mighty, heavy gate tower. The fortress is accessible from the castle via a drawbridge. A 100-meter-long driveway extends in front of the castle and the fortress, guiding the viewer's gaze across the meadows along the Lingedijk to the town of Heukelum.

The castle is a private house and not open to the public. Heukelum is a nice town and the cycle path along the east side to Leerdam is also very beautiful.
