Montanejos

Highlight • Settlement

Water, walks and corners full of serenity await you in Montanejos, where you can visit natural fountains in the middle of nature.
Talking about the history of Montanejos is talking about its Black Cave, where we find ourselves in the Neolithic period, discovering that its first settlers were already seduced by this location next to the Mijares River.

El Corral del Sordo (Torralba Side)

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

dandolotodo09.com/2018/10/puertos-corral-del-sordo-por-torralba.html

On the road that connects the towns of Torralba del Pinar with Montán, we find the climb that we have called Corral del Sordo, through an old hamlet that appears on the maps and is close to the top. Today we stop with the Torralba del Pinar slope. The Montán slope has already been analyzed in another tab on our blog, see here.

As can be seen from the altimetry, it is a sawtooth-type port, with highly variable slopes. This usually happens when we cycle along old forest tracks that were paved in more modern times, this may well be the case on the ascent of Corral del Sordo. The climb starts at a concrete ford, the road is not too wide, but in general the asphalt is quite good for cycling with road bikes. Hard double-digit ramps alternate with rest areas, making for quite an entertaining climb. After the crossing to Cirat (BTT), we even find a descent, after which the maximum slope is recorded at 14%. Traffic is non-existent, so it is a very good option to include this port in cycling routes through Espadán Norte.

El Corral del Sordo Ascent from Montán

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

dandolotodo09.com/2016/02/puertos-el-corral-del-sordo-desde-montan.html

Hello friends of Giving Everything, today we present another port of those that you do not pass through every day, but that undoubtedly leave a mark, the Corral del Sordo from Montán. A gateway (and what a gate) to the Sierra Espadán from the west that leaves no one indifferent.

As we have already indicated, the port begins in Montán, so if you come from the coast you have to arm yourself with patience (and energy) to get there. In the same town we take the road towards Torralba del Pinar and immediately this ascent of almost 8 km begins, cataloged by Strava as a 3rd category.

There are two important issues to highlight in this port. The first, which is quite impressive, are the remains of the fire that occurred in summer 2015, very visible in the first part of the climb. It is quite overwhelming to see the scorched terrain in such an incomparable setting ... and so close to the town! At first you are so aware of that that you do not notice that you have already faced some ramps above 10%

And the second important issue to highlight about this port, its irregularity. Although we spoke last Monday of Coll de Arenillas as a port with few emotions in terms of percentages, El Corral del Sordo is undoubtedly the most fickle port we have faced. In fact, we could say that there are practically no "normal" ramps, since the breaks (even the descents) are combined with a multitude of ramps above 10%. The good thing is that it is a port that gives you breaths, allows you to take a breath, drink ... the bad thing is that it is absolutely impossible to catch a constant rhythm, its irregularity makes the pulsations rise and fall without stopping, after a break, a wall at 12%, 13% or even 16%, and so on for more than 6 km

Well, we reached the last 1.5 km, and here it is better to have saved some energy, since the irregularity ends ... but for the worse, since now the hardness is constant, with many sections above 10% and ramps up to 15%. Although the previous sections can be overcome moderately well by the breaks, now it is necessary to carry an adequate development, the fatigue and the high percentages can take their toll on more than one. Here we go through the detour that takes us to the corral del deado, a farm that gives the port its name but cannot be seen from the road, we have to go inside.
