Serrejón

Highlight • Settlement

Serrejón is a typical Extremaduran municipality, surrounded by beautiful meadows of holm oaks, olive trees and oaks. It is located right at the gates of the Monfragüe National Park.

Surrounded by oak forest plantations, the small town of Serrejón is located in the foothills of the Sierra de Serrejón, on the eastern edge of the Monfragüe National Park. If you are passing through the town, stop to see the town hall square or the village church.

Picazo Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

The last ten kilometers of the route are fantastic, they do not have any geographical or technical difficulties and they run through a delicious plain of pastured hills. An important value in the quality of the landscape is the passage through several wetlands and small lagoons where notable bird communities are concentrated. The Charcas de los Prados, the Picazo reservoir, the Casa lagoon and the Balsas de los Calles are close to the dirt track and depending on the season it is easy to see cranes, teals, shovelers, tufted pochards, gray herons, grebes greaves, little grebes, cormorants and friendly hoopoes sharing ditches and sections of the road with cyclists.

Ermita de San Blas, Toril

Highlight • Religious Site

Toril is a nice little town with just a few streets, but it's a good place to start an adventure on the surrounding trails. An interesting thing to see is the Hermitage of San Blas.

Toril

Highlight • Settlement

The population maintains the original urban structure of the rural villages of Campo Arañuelo in the 15th century, an urban composition of the Extremaduran meadows that is difficult to find in today's localities. The parish church of San Blas maintains its original 16th century building, although it has been conditioned to house the Pórtico de Monfragüe Interpretation Center. The visit is essential to get to know the ecosystem of the meadow and obtain information on cycling and hiking routes. Toril is one of the 14 municipalities integrated into the network of cycling routes of the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve BTT Center. And above all it is an ideal environment for modern gravel bikes and all-terrain cycling of all levels.

Toril is on two of the eight itineraries that the BTT Center has. And it also has a signposted panoramic hiking route through the Dehesa de Maulique and the Tiétar plain suitable for bicycles. A varied and complete gravel route is number 5 in the Dehesas de Arrocampo, medium level, blue in color and comfortable to go with the family or initiate beginners into the world of country cycling. The proposed gravel route coincides with part of the route, it leaves the door of the Interpretation Center along the Camino del Cordel de Plasencia, where there is a small recreational area, and is marked with the milestones of the Tagus Nature Trail of the stage between Serrejón and Villarreal de San Carlos.
