Serón Railway Station

Highlight • Monument

It is a beautiful station that has been maintained and rehabilitated to now serve visitors and travelers who arrive via the Greenway. I recommend you take advantage of the visit to recharge your batteries in its restaurant.

This is a particularly beautiful and well-kept part of the greenway that corresponds to the so-called Tramo del Hierro.

Encina de la Peana

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Holm oak of La Peana is a specimen of Quercus ilex from the Sierra de los Filabres. It is located in the municipality of Serón, in the province of Almería, Spain. It was declared a natural monument of Andalusia in 2019.
It is considered, according to the technicians of the Ministry of the Environment of the Junta de Andalucía, the largest tree and one of the oldest of all those cataloged to date in the autonomous community.

Of enormous beauty, this specimen stands out for the size of its stem and crown, which are proportioned and form a very balanced structure. The cross is very wide and is formed by four main branches that are subdivided into a tracery, constituting a perfectly rounded crown.

The local name is due to a large base of almost 15 meters in perimeter that presents the base and that makes it act as a pedestal highlighting its perfection, reaching about 19 meters in height.

The Encina de la Peana is located on a west-facing slope with a steep slope next to other scattered holm oaks. Other hundred-year-old specimens of this species survive in the vicinity, such as the Holm oak at Ermita de La Loma, the Holm oak at Marchal del Abogado or the one at Los Sapos.

Holm Oak of El Marchal del Abogado

Highlight • Natural Monument

La Encina del El Marchal del Abogado seems to emerge from a world of beings from fairy tales. It is an example of those rare botanical individuals that has survived thousands of years, witnessing the passage of time and the radical transformations of its environment. The common sense of the people, the overwhelming logic has protected them for generations and has allowed them to survive over so many years, tree species that are part of the bustle of people, peoples and their history.

In the Almanzora Valley there is an important and still unknown tree mass cataloged and singled out in aspects as diverse as its longevity, a capricious morphology, height or its symbiosis with the nearby population.

The Encina del El Marchal del Abogado, located in the municipality of Serón, is an obvious example due to its unique shape, since it offers a perimeter of trunk that exceeds six meters and symbolizes, together with the Poplar of El Marchal del Abogado, a set of opposites that represent the versatility of the arboreal world and evoke the well-known couple of knight and squire.

Close to the Sierra de Baza Natural Park, in addition to the area's interesting monumental and ethnographic heritage (Las Menas de Serón mines), the headwaters of the Almanzora offer an interesting Greenway for non-motorized enjoyment.

This unique botanical specimen is part of an excellent group of unique trees that dot the Almanzora Valley and its slopes: Acerolo del Cortijo de las Iglesias, Cornicabra del Puente de El Valle, Encina de El Marchal de El Abogado, Poplar de El Marchal de The Lawyer, Encina de la Fuente el Pino, Encina de los Trébedes and Olivo de las Lomas.
