Markgröningen Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The town hall of the town of Markgröningen was built from 1441 as a department store, council and court building of the former Württemberg district town of Grüningen. The size and the high structural quality of the listed half-timbered building reflect the "second spring" of the former imperial city in the 15th century.

Hospital

Highlight • Historical Site

The local branch of the Order of the Holy Spirit was consecrated in 1297. The former benefice, now known as the hospital, served to care for the elderly and sick and was built in 1509. The hospital cellar below, which is now known for family celebrations and club events, was built in 1507.

After the Reformation, the sovereign took possession of the hospital in 1534. The benefice continued until the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634. After that, the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War in southwest Germany brought economic, social and community life to a standstill. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the benefice was a municipal poorhouse, which had to be financed using the former hospital property.

The discussions about renovating or demolishing all the buildings, especially the former benefice, dragged on for decades. It was only economic stimulus programs from 1975 onwards that enabled the city to renovate it. The northern part was occupied in 1978 and the southern part in 1981.

The 42-meter-long building now houses the council meeting room, club rooms, the youth music school and the city library in the south wing. Here, on the publicly accessible first floor, the ceiling beams and posts show the former room layout with the benefice rooms accessed from the central corridor.
