Panoramic view of the Totes Gebirge

Highlight • Viewpoint

The name derives from the lack of water due to the absence of springs or above-ground channels and the widespread lack of vegetation on the central plateau.

Beautiful landscape, which looks even more beautiful in real life than in the pictures. I can recommend it to everyone.

Almsee East Shore Trail

Highlight • Trail

Almost two and a half kilometers wide, 700 meters long and hardly to be surpassed in idyll. The panorama alone takes your breath away. The Almsee - about eleven kilometers from Grünau im Almtal - is always worth a visit.

Almsee Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Almsee is located in the municipality of Grünau im Almtal, about 11 km south of the town center of Grünau.

In the Triassic (approx. 230 to 195 million years ago) most of the rocks of the Northern Limestone Alps were deposited in a shallow sea (= Triassic Sea). This sea had various habitats such as reefs, lagoons and submarine cliffs. In the Jurassic (around 195 to 140 million years ago) the floor of the Triassic Sea broke up, basins emerged and sills remained between them. This led to different deposits: thick layers of sediment formed in the basins, but only poor ones on the sills. In the Cretaceous period (approx. 140 to 65 million years ago) the Alpine mountain building began - the Alps were unfolded. In the Tertiary period (around 65 to 1.8 million years ago) the Northern Limestone Alps rose into a high mountain range. The remaining basin between the Alps and the Bohemian Massif was slowly filled in, creating the molasse rocks.

Almsee

Highlight • Lake

The area around this picturesque lake is not in vain under nature protection. Here live many rare species and the vegetation on and in the lake is also exceptional. The alpine lake, which characterizes the Almtal and flows into the Traun after 48 kilometers, rises from the Almsee.
