Madenburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

A jewel among the Palatinate castles. Well restored, with an excellent castle tavern and a view that can otherwise only be enjoyed from the Landeck. On clear days you can see across the entire Rhine plain to the Odenwald.

You can park right next to the castle. Admission free.

At the upper parking lot to the castle, a short distance away at the Pieta cottage, there are three seating arrangements for taking a break.

Throughout the village, 38 life-sized, creatively and colorfully designed donkeys can be found. Pretty.

Eschbach Slide Fountain

Highlight • Monument

This beautiful fountain is in Eschbach, a municipality in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate.
- it was built in 1993 to commemorate a very special event by the sculptor Burghard Knauf

Story about the fountain:
In 1843 the Treaty of Verdun (843) was to be celebrated throughout Germany. In the Palatinate, this 1000-year celebration was to take place in Landau. A procession and a celebration at the "Madenburg" were planned in Eschbach, the "Eschbacher Partie". When the participants were celebrating on the "Madenburg", a rising storm forced them to return to the village. The "Eschbach game" became a "slip game".

"Eschbach" is also known for its 38 life-size donkey sculptures, which were painted/designed by various artists

The ruins of "Madenburg" tower over Eschbach. their noble owners in
15th century knights and tournament society "with the donkey" belonged. The Eschbachers were subjects of the "Donkey Knights" and there

The people of Eschbach and their donkeys, as the saying goes. The people of Eschbach were pious citizens and lived a Christian life, and they decorated their clothes with donkey motifs. The citizens of Eschbach live below the Madenburg and used to be the subjects of the donkey knights. Therefore, the citizens of Eschbach decorate their village with numerous donkeys.

October 12, 2024,Pfälzer Weinsteig 09 geändert: Von Klingenmünster nach Leinsweiler und über die Ebene zurück.
Nice little hike with a friend from Klingenmünster: just before the end we passed the Nikolaus Chapel, which I had never noticed before. And a very nice gentleman told us a bit about its history. I thought the scallop shell at the entrance was funny.

Today I was drawn to the southern wine route to Klingenmünster, as I wanted to get the stamps of the Nikolaus Chapel and the collegiate church of St. Michael, a former Benedictine monastery, from the Klingenmünster Star Trail loop, as they were not open last year with @Bettina.
I parked my car at the destination in Eschbach and as I …

Because the southern Palatinate radiates a touch of Tuscany, I call yesterday's tour "Monti e vigneti". Spontaneously we decided to visit Landeck Castle and Madenburg again after a long time.
The plan was to hike half of the tour in the forest and the other half along the almond path between Eschbach and Klingenmünster.

A trip with friends in glorious weather ☀️😎.

From Eschbach to Klingenmünster and back via Madenburg. Wonderful 🤩

Followed by a wine tasting at Weingut Wind, dinner at Weinstube Mathis, and back home with Palatinate music (bottles clinking in the trunk). You can't fit more into one day 🥳🥰

After a delicious meal in the Castell, a restful night and a very sumptuous breakfast, we went up the next slope from Leinsweiler to meet the Weinsteig again. It led first through the vines, then through the forest and a hollow uphill to the parking lot below the Madenburg (by the way: the wild boars did a lot of digging …

Over the Weinsteig to Madenburg, over the Keschdeweg descent to Eschenbach and back through the vineyards...
that's the short description...
and Madenburg is indeed a beautiful destination for a view, excursion and a stopover.

Wide views with a 360° panorama and a small, rustic castle tavern.
