Blåbjerg Monument and Viewpoint

Highlight • Monument

Denmark's highest dune, Blåbjerg, is 64 metres high and offers a very wide view in good weather. The dune used to serve as a navigation mark because it was clearly visible from the sea. It got its name because it resembled a blue mountain from a distance.

A really great forest area with mini oaks. As a hiker, however, you have to watch out for all the mountain bikers, who also use the hiking trails

The Danish name Løvklitter (directly translated: foliage dunes) for this remarkable landscape is a fitting term for a very special natural phenomenon. The dunes are a result of sand drifting in the area around Lake Filsø in the past. For several hundred years the sand was the cause of great problems for the local population, who were dependent on the sparse arable land. The sand even covered entire forests. The low bushes that cover the dune landscape therefore actually consist of the treetops of large silted oaks. So you walk through the canopy of trees that are seven or eight meters high, and which, despite the large amount of sand, are able to get enough sunlight through the leaves of the canopy and to survive. During the leaf sprouting in spring, you can observe that the leaves sprout on different days and thus discover which of the small "bushes" belong to the same tree. The trees are a little over 200 years old.
