Cascade Locks

Highlight • Settlement

Cascade Locks sits at the Columbia River and is the last town in Oregon before you leave the state into Washington over the iconic Bridge of the Gods. The small town has a general store, a post office, restaurants and some accomodation. The Ale House is very hiker friendly and welcomes PCT hikers with a free beer. Highly recommened! And don't forget to ask for the hiker special that is not on the menu. You will be served a giant burger sandwiched between two small pizzas.

There are a few good eats and drinks in town, and Thunder Island Brewing is for sure one of them. There are some great home brews on tap, and they can change, so try them while they are in rotation. Dine inside the new taproom or enjoy the views on the outdoor patio, where dogs are welcome to join.

Dry Creek Falls is a beautiful basalt plunge waterfall that gets much less traffic than a lot of the other waterfalls in the area. The well-maintained Pacific Crest Trail provides a good hiking surface for this hike.

Thunder Island

Highlight • Natural

In 1890 Thunder Island is a small island on the Colombia River that was carved out of the mainland build the Cascade Locks and Canal. This area is important to Native American Fishermans who still use it today, so please visit respectfully. The island is just a few yards on the other side of the footbridge heading northwest.

Description

If you're looking for a rewarding moderate hike in the Columbia River Gorge that offers both natural beauty and a touch of history without the usual crowds, the Cascade Locks – Dry Creek Falls loop from Cascade Locks is an excellent choice. This 7.5-mile (12.1 km) hiking route, rated moderate, involves 1071 feet (326 metres) of climbing and typically takes around 3 hours and 33 minutes to complete, making it a solid half-day adventure for those seeking a scenic escape.

What to expect on Cascade Locks – Dry Creek Falls loop from Cascade Locks

The journey begins by navigating through the edge of Cascade Locks, including a stretch under I-84, before joining the renowned Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) heading south. You'll soon find yourself immersed in lush forests of Douglas fir and maples, with ferns carpeting the ground, offering ample shade. While much of the path is mildly graded, expect the final 0.2 miles leading to Dry Creek Falls to be the steepest part of the ascent. The highlight is undoubtedly the 74-foot waterfall itself, plunging into a mossy grotto framed by interesting columnar basalt formations. You'll also notice remnants of the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, with new growth actively reclaiming the landscape, making this a suitable trail for those who appreciate forest recovery and a rewarding waterfall destination.

Planning your visit

This trail is accessible year-round, though conditions may vary with snow and ice in winter. It's generally less crowded than other popular Gorge hikes, offering a more peaceful experience. The loop incorporates a return via Dry Creek Road and city streets, so be mindful of your surroundings. Parking is available in Cascade Locks, and arriving earlier in the day is always a good strategy, especially on weekends, to secure a spot.
