What to expect on Whittier Hill – Puente Hills Preserve loop from Hillgrove
This route offers a genuine "urban wilderness" experience, winding through rolling hills that showcase coastal sage scrub and oak woodlands. As you ascend, the terrain can include some uneven sections with rocks and roots, but nothing too challenging for an easy-rated hike. The real highlight is reaching higher points, particularly Whittier Hill, where you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Los Angeles Basin, the surrounding Puente Hills, and on clear days, even Catalina Island and the distant San Gabriel Mountains. Keep an eye out for the distinctive water tower on Whittier Hill, which some say resembles a crashed satellite, adding a unique landmark to your journey.
Planning your visit
Before you head out, be aware of the preserve's operating hours: generally 9 AM to 5 PM from October to May, and 9 AM to 6 PM from June to September. The trails are strictly closed outside these times, and you'll find them closed for 48 hours after any rain events or during "red flag days" due to fire hazards. Dogs are welcome on leash in most areas, making it a good choice for a dog-friendly hike.
