Entrance to Caminito del Rey

Highlight • Gorge

Unfortunately I didn't get an individual ticket for the caminito del rey. That's why we booked a tour from the Hotel Gargante, because we really want to see this gorge.

The El Chorro train station is a historical building that was built with the construction of the railway line between Málaga and Córdoba. The line was opened in 1865, and the station itself was built around the same time. The station was an important hub for travelers and workers traveling in the region.

A well-known film that was partially filmed in El Chorro is "Von Ryan's Express" with Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard. The impressive landscape of El Chorro, including the train station and the surrounding mountains, served as a backdrop for scenes from this film. Today, the train station is a popular starting point for outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore the Caminito del Rey or the impressive gorges of El Chorro.

From this point, you have a beautiful view of the Caminito del Rey suspension bridge, which spans the Rio Guadalhorce gorge. The road is quiet with little traffic, and the spot is easily accessible.

If you then choose the route across the dam bridge, you can also drive on the other side of the Embalse Tajo de la Encantada reservoir. This route takes you via El Chorro even closer to the mouth of the gorge. There are two options: either along the water's edge or up the path almost to the Caminito del Rey exit. For the latter, it's advisable to wait until the Caminito del Rey closes due to the crowds, as the path is a steep, gravel climb. The view, however, is even more magnificent.

Hermitage of Our Lady of Villaverde

Highlight • Religious Site

Next to the current hermitage, which was renovated in the 1960s, prehistoric tombs from the Mozarabic period were discovered, carved into the rock. Near the hermitage, on a promontory, the remains of a watchtower known as the Peñón del Moro were discovered, evidence of the great importance of the enclave at that time.
