The Gnitz was still an island in the Middle Ages. But the narrow waterway silted up over the centuries, and only the elongated Great Stumminsee, surrounded by swampy strips, remains. While the eastern part of the peninsula is characterized by heath, pasture and farmland, the hills in the west are largely surrounded by beautiful mixed forests.
