Actually Åhus was not granted town rights until 1326, but the town clerks consider 1149 to be the actual year of recognition. Åhus was an important trading center in Denmark in the Middle Ages, as this part of Sweden was part of Denmark at that time. Outside the gates of the city, the castle Auose hus was also built, which today only exists as a ruin between industry. Only in 1658, in the peace of Roskilde, Åhus fell back to Sweden.
