Lübeck‑Schlutup Border Documentation Center

Highlight • Historical Site

During the GDR era, we used the Lübeck-Schlutup border crossing to Selmsdorf many times to visit our relatives who lived along the Baltic coast. I remember the oppressive atmosphere and the pounding heart when you drove down this road and were about to be checked by the GDR border guards.
The fact that you can ride a bike here today in the sunshine is a great blessing.

Rehder Bridge, Lübeck

Highlight • Bridge

As an engineer, Peter Rehder developed the plans for the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and made a special contribution to Lübeck's waterways. What was closer? than to name a bridge after him.
Even if not on the first try. The bridge was built in 1935-1936 to better connect the districts of St. Gertrud and St. Jürgen with the city center. The bridge was initially named after Horst Wessel, but immediately after the end of the Third Reich, in 1946, it was renamed in honor of the person who was really committed to positive things in Lübeck.

The bridge itself is under monument protection. In sight of the bridge, a round tower, which is adapted to the Lübeck architecture, catches the eye. It is a bunker from World War II. If you walk out of the center of the bridge, the culvert, the Wakenitz, ends there with the inlet of this through a pipe system into the Krähenteich.
