I return to the Darß every six years and find the high shore changed every time. The fact that there are no longer any summer steps down to the beach and that all the bunker facilities are now located in the Baltic Sea waters is one thing. Another is the fact that the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has only registered this stretch of beach as a Natura 2000 site with Brussels, which eliminates any coastal protection and sacrifices meter after meter of high shore to the sea. Coastal protection is being practiced in Wustrow, Ahrenshoop, and Prerow – but not on the high shore!
