Helmsley Market Cross

The Market is held in the central ancient Market Square every Friday and is alleged to date back to the 13th century.

If you're in the picturesque market town of Helmsley, it's well worth a visit to this historic castle. Boasting more than 900 years of history, you can learn how the castle has evolved from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. As you saunter through the ruins, it's amazing to imagine all the people who have trodden in your exact footsteps throughout the centuries.
There is ample parking nearby in the town and at the castle. The castle is run by English Heritage and you have to pay to enter.

Cleveland Way: Helmsley to Nettle Dale

This is a superb section of the 109-mile (175 km) Cleveland Way; a revered hiking trail that showcases the best of the North York Moors. On this section, you leave the picturesque market town of Helmsley and pass the magnificent ruins of Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey before exploring the glorious Nettle Dale.

Sutton Bank National Park Centre

Highlight • Cafe

This is the North York Moors National Park visitor centre, café and information centre. An excellent place to stop for food and drink. A series of footpaths from here, minutes from the centre itself, is very pleasant and there are excellent views all the way to Yorkshire Dales from near here. Also, spot the lovely wooden sculptures of animals peppered all over the place!

A North York Moors National Park visitor centre, cafe and information centre. Start your walk here and pick up one of the local walking trails maps or use the facilities and plan your own adventure. Entry to the centre is free and anything you buy from the shop or cafe helps support the work the national park authority do.
