The Coal Road Climb

Highlight • Climb

Magnificently tough from either side, the climb from Garsdale Head station is iconic. The road has been resurfaced in 2017 and is now one of the best quiet stretches in the Cold Dark North.

The amazing view of rolling road heading West to Sedbergh from Hawes. A true rollercoaster.

Here's where they make proper Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, so you can go into the visitors centre and explore their 'cheese experience' if you're interested. Alternatively, go to the shop and cafe for a quick sit-down. The cafe is open daily from 9:00am to 3.30pm, and has beautiful views from its huge windows, as well as a great cheese-y menu.

Highlight • Viewpoint

Beautiful gradual climb out of Hawes towards Ribblehead. Can be hard work with a south-westerly wind though!

Part of the Settle to Carlisle Railway the Ribblehead Viaduct is an impressive structure. Completed in 1874 by a workforce of 2,300 men it is worth a visit for the photo opportunity alone.
