De Donnea Castle

Highlight • Castle

Among the first inhabitants of the current castle was the centenarian Count Edouard-Louis de Preston (Liège, 1783 - Beverst, 1884). He was married to Baroness Caroline de Wittenbach (Freiburg, Switzerland, 1801 - Bilzen, 1836) and their nine children, most of whom died very young. The children were all born in Bilzen, so it is likely that he only came to live in Guigoven after 1836, as a widower.
The third child survived. It concerned Countess Marie-Clémentine de Preston (Bilzen, 1830 - Beverst, 1913), who in 1852 married Count Jean-Ferdinand de Renesse ('s Herenelderen, 1806 - Guigoven, 1867), an officer in the Prussian army and son of Clément de Renesse-Breidbach, member of the National Congress.
One of their sons was Theodore de Renesse (Guigoven, 1854 - Beverst, 1927), who married Countess Berthe du Chastel de la Howarderie (1860-1941) in 1890 and they had three daughters. He was governor of Limburg from 1919 until his death.
After the Renesses, the castle was inhabited by esquire Vincent de Kerckhove dit van der Varent (Schaerbeek, 1855 - Jesseren, 1914). He was married to Virginie Duvivier (Vliermaal, 1859 - Forville, 1921). They had eight children, the last four of whom were born between 1887 and 1895 in Guigoven. Having previously been mayor of Steenokkerzeel and provincial councilor for Brabant, he became alderman of Guigoven. He was the owner of the Société Anonyme La Grande Siroperie Limbourgeoise in Jesseren - Borgloon.
After 1905, members of the De Donnea family came to live in the castle. In 1914, during World War I, it was looted. Among the residents of the Donnea are to be mentioned:
Knight Oscar de Donnea (Tongeren, 1871 - Brussels, 1938), mayor of Gors-Opleeuw, married Jeanne de Grady de la Neuville (Liège 1879 - Guigoven 1955).
Knight Albert de Donnea (Gors-Opleeuw, 1904 - Guigoven, 1966), mayor of Guigoven.
Marguerite de Donnea (Gors-Opleeuw, 1907 - Guigoven-Kortessem, 2005).

St. Peter's Church Kortessem

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Pieterskerk is the parish church of Kortessem and is located at Kerkplein No. 1.
Story
A church was first mentioned in the 11th century. A Romanesque nave was built between 1026 and 1038. The Romanesque west tower dates from the second half of the 12th century. An early Gothic choir and transept were added in 1270-1272.
In 1225 the church became a collegiate church.
The church has suffered a lot of violence. In 1468 it was sacked by the troops of Charles the Bold. In 1490 it was set on fire by the gangs of Jehannot-le-Bâtard. William of Orange's troops also caused destruction in 1568. Looting also occurred later, including by French troops.
The restoration took place in 1870-1875 under the direction of Herman Jaminé, during which the side aisles were enlarged in the neo-Romanesque style using old materials.
