Bistal Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

The Bistal is a forested gorge system cut deep into the steep slopes and a very beautiful piece of earth.
The Bistal is crossed by the stream coming from the north and belongs to the communities Escheburg and Kröppelshagen-Fahrendorf in roughly equal proportions.
The area is about five kilometers from the south-eastern border of Hamburg and is located between the Hamburg district of Bergedorf and the city of Geesthacht.
The Bistal is located directly in the bacon belt of Hamburg in the scenic area between Sachsenwald in the north and Elbe in the south. It is part of the forested Geesthang, which stretches from Hamburg-Bergedorf via Börnsen and Escheburg to Geesthacht and which in the prehistory was the northern bank of the Elbe-Urstromtal and is continuously about 50 meters above the flat marsh.
The Bistal was created around 15,000 to 80,000 years ago, similar to the nearby Dalbekschlucht nature reserve. At that time, especially the Vistula ice age, the glaciers from the north had come to a standstill in the area of today's Holstein. The masses of water from the melting glaciers dug their way deep into the earth to the Elbe glacial valley. This created this 20 to 40 meter deep erosion canyon.
The Bistal passes into a forest area in the north, which is a foothill of the community-free Saxony forest.
Coordinates: 53 ° 28 ′ 4 ″ N, 10 ° 20 ′ 12 ″ E

Drumshorn Memorial Stone

Highlight • Monument

The memorial stone commemorates the fact that Drumshorn was created in 1785 by the settlement of 6 horses in the coupling of the Hohenhorn field mark.

In the coat of arms of Hohenhorn there is a black memorial stone flanked by black field stone walls on an elevated green mountain. Above are two upright green linden leaves that are inclined outwards.

The community of Hohenhorn consists of the original church village of Hohenhorn and the former place of residence and today's district of Drumshorn. The two linden leaves of the coat of arms refer to these districts on the one hand and the many linden trees in the center of the village on the other.
The other coat of arms figures have an unusual naturalistic design for coats of arms:
The inscriptions on the field stone wall depict events that are important in terms of local history. The Finding in the middle is reminiscent of the "coupling" of the parish corridor completed in 1785. It occurred as part of the agricultural reforms begun in 1764 in the Duchy of Lauenburg, which was then part of the Kingdom of Hanover. It removed the flare and divided the commons.
The plow symbolizes the rural character of Hohenhorn, which continues to this day.
