The Tharandt Forestry University is a traditional forestry educational institution.
Affiliated to the Technical University of Dresden since 1929.
Originally founded as a private forestry school between 1785 and 1795 in Zillbach, Thuringia, by Johann Heinrich Cotta. Moved to Tharandt since 1811. After protracted negotiations, it became the Royal Saxon Forestry Academy in 1816. This is now part of the Department of Forest Sciences of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the TU Dresden and is one of the oldest forestry faculties in the world. Since 1904 it has held the rank of university.
Because of this long tradition, Tharandt is also called a forest town.
