Steinklunsen Rock Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Steinklunsen (437.2 m) are an elevation in the forest area Großer Wald between Beiersdorfer Wasser and Flössel south of Beiersdorf. On it there is a hilltop with a north-facing rock face, which is about 40 meters long and up to 4 meters high. The Tannenhof is on the south-eastern slope.

The name Steinklunsen, formerly called Beiersdorfer Hain or Hain Steinklausen, indicates split rock. Name analogies that are independent of the rock type are also known from other parts of Upper Lusatia. There are the Nonnenklunsen in the Zittau Mountains and the Steinklunsen on the Sonnenhübel in Königsholz near Oderwitz. In the map of Oberreit, a forest tip was named Kleiner Wald in comparison to the Großer Wald, which adjoins to the south. According to a legend, another designation as "boot bush" is said to be related to a bet that says that the manor owner of Beiersdorf had lost them to the manor owner of Oppacher for a pair of boots.
