Very easy to ride - except in headwinds. In addition, thanks to the high dam, you always have a bit of a view. Unfortunately, you always have the noise of the highway, which usually runs right next to the dam.

Historic Old Town of Maienfeld

Highlight • Historical Site

The origins of the historic town
Nothing is known about the origins of the historic town. What is certain, however, is that the settlement was founded before the Romans invaded. However, it is assumed that it was located a little further towards St. Luzisteig. Various bronze finds and a so-called cup stone, which was discovered at the top of the town in an old cellar vault, are considered evidence of the settlement's pre-Roman origins.
The first documented information about the existence of the settlement dates back to the year 831. At that time, the town was called Lupinis. In Roman times it was still called Statio Maiensis or Magia. Over the centuries, the name of the town is said to have changed as follows: from Magia to Lupinis, from Magenza back to Lupinis, then from Lopine, Maging, Magen to Luppinis and Lupis. The name Maienvelt first appears in 1295. The names Maging and Lupinis are said to contain personal names, but this could never be properly proven.
It is not known when the town received town rights, the ring walls and the moat, and unfortunately they are not mentioned anywhere. However, it is generally assumed that this happened in the 11th or 12th century. The town had three gates: the Linden or Churer Gate, the Lindauer-Bregenzer Gate and the Rheintörlein, which led to the so-called Schifflände. It is known where the gates were, but nothing remains of them today.
On the other hand, the original town walls have been preserved in three places: in front of the Churer Gate, at the Pfrundhaus and below the town hall. The castle, today's Maienfeld Castle, was closely connected to the town, but had its own fortress walls and stood outside the town. During this time and later during the Graubünden turmoil, many battles took place on the Luzisteig. The town suffered greatly as a result. At the same time, the plague killed more than half of the population within a year. Eight large fires are mentioned, and in the war year of 1622 the entire town burned down. To protect themselves from looters, often Austrian hordes, Maienfeld formed its own militia in uniforms in the town's colors. Even before the Reformation, first mentioned around 1510, a primary school was founded, which was particularly praised under Hans Ardüser in 1577.
