Buchenwald Memorial Bell Tower

Highlight • Monument

Buchenwald Concentration Camp, officially KL Buchenwald, was one of the largest concentration camps on German soil. It operated as a forced labor camp on the Ettersberg hill near Weimar between July 1937 and April 1945. A total of approximately 277,800 people from 50 countries were imprisoned in Buchenwald during this period.[1] The death toll is estimated at around 56,000, including 15,000 Soviet citizens, 7,000 Poles, 6,000 Hungarians, and 3,000 French citizens.[2] As the 3rd US Army approached on April 11, 1945, the prisoners took control of the camp from the retreating SS, arrested 125 of the guards, opened the gates, and raised a white flag.

In 2009, the design of the memorial stones was started here. They are intended to commemorate children and adolescents who were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1944.

The bronze sculpture refers to the many victims of the Buchenwald concentration camp up to 1945. The victims of the Soviet special camp No. 2, which was located on the Ettersberg between 1945 and 1950, played no role at that time.

The political and art-political disputes surrounding Fritz Cremer's group of figures prevented the monument from being completed quickly. Between 1952 and 1954 the artist presented three draft versions of the sculpture. In the course of the work he designed a total of 42 individual figures.

Ruins of the SS Leadership Settlement

Highlight • Historical Site

In the immediate vicinity of the camp, on the sunny and leeward south side of the Ettersberg, were ten villas of the SS leaders of the camp management and their families. The families of the SS leaders, which usually had several children, led a life of middle-class prosperity. Inmates worked as domestic servants. The first camp commandant Koch lived with his family in the largest house in the settlement, the so-called Haus Buchenwald.
In the mid-1950s, the villas were destroyed during demolition exercises by the GDR People's Police barracks stationed on Ettersberg. Remains of the man-high quarry stone walls and remnants of the garden design were made visible again in the 1990s.
