Sainte-Catherine Church

In the middle of Rue du Bourg, in the historic city center of Sierre, the Sainte-Catherine church forms one of the most expressive Baroque architecture complexes in Valais. The Notre-Dame des Marais church became too cramped for the people of Sierre, so the Sainte-Catherine church was built in the 17th century. The most important piece of church furniture is the main altar, which is inspired by that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The choir vault has a stucco decoration consisting of a cartouche (sculptural ornament in the form of a half-rolled map) with Saint Catherine in the middle. The church was restored between 1991 and 1996.
