Wartensee Castle

Highlight • Castle

Wartensee Castle is located on a hill in Rorschacherberg above Lake Constance. It is surrounded by a large park and was once the country estate of a wealthy family. The history of the castle goes back to the 13th century. Its current form was achieved through a renovation in the 19th century. Only then did it acquire its current style, characterized by neo-Gothic elements. Today Wartensee Castle is used as a hotel and event location.

Schloss Wartensee, Rorschacherberg
Schloss Wartensee is a historic complex of buildings in Rorschacherberg. It dates back to a residential tower from the 13th century and is now privately owned as Schloss-Hotel Wartensee. It is not to be confused with Schloss Wartegg, which is also located in the municipality of Rorschacherberg.
The western tower was built in 1243 by Knight Heinrich von Wartensee as a residential tower. Through the marriage of two female descendants, the tower passed to the brothers Walter and Diethelm Blarer from St. Gallen in 1377. The Blarer von Wartensee family owned Schloss Wartensee until 1719 and expanded the castle into a triple residence. They sold their ancestral castle to Kaspar Jakob Segesser von Brunegg. In 1757, his sons Franz Josef, a Bavarian court chamberlain, and Franz Anton, a Baden-Baden Oberst-Stallmeister, sold Wartensee to the Abbey of St. Gallen for 12,000 guilders.
Further shaping the current appearance were the renovations by the son of the English composer Robert Lucas Pearsall de Willsbridge between 1843 and 1853: This gave the castle its current neo-Gothic character and the surrounding park.

After further changes of ownership, the property was taken over in 1955 by the association Ostschweizerische Evangelische Heimstätte Schloss Wartensee and used as an educational center.[1] In 1984, Schloss Wartensee came into the possession of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of St. Gallen, which – after extensive renovation from 1994 to 1996 – continued to operate it as a conference and meeting center until the end of 2011.
