St Michael and St Mary’s Church, Melbourne

The church is medieval and existed when the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086. The current building dates from the early part of the 12th century when the living of Melbourne was given to the Bishop of Carlisle.

It was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1859 and 1862. It was closed for one year at the start of the restoration in 1859 and reopened on 3 November 1860, when enough work had been completed to allow the congregation to use the building. The interior was renovated. The aisles were floored with red and white Mansfield stone laid in a diamond pattern. The chancel was laid with Minton encaustic tiles. A new pulpit and reading desk were installed. The wall plaster was removed and the stonework revealed. The west front stonework was renewed.

A short hill climb up to a beautiful little church with an amazing view of the East Midlands. The climb is short and steep but perfectly doable for anyone. The road is very narrow and a bit twisty but usually very quiet as it leads only to the church.

The Round House (Lock-Up)

Highlight • Historical Site

This building was a lockup with a small attached animal pound. It was built in the 18th century. Before a national system of policing was set up many villages had their own lockup. Criminals (often drunks, petty thieves and those starting fights) were held for a short time. They were then either released or sent to a larger town for trial. They were often built as part of a complex including the village pound, stocks and pillory. They date back to around the 1560s. Generally the lockup was used by the parish constable who had the unpaid job of keeping law and order in his own parish.
