Isar Estuary Nature Reserve

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

The mouth of the Isar is one of the most important meadow landscapes in Central Europe. An investigation revealed that almost 700 species of flowering plants had been preserved in the remains of the natural landscape shaped by the Isar, a number otherwise unrivaled in Lower Bavaria. There are numerous species that are highly endangered according to the "Red List", such as cup bell, glossy spurge, god's grace herb, marsh glacial root and lady's grass. Over twenty species of orchids have been identified, including lady's slipper, dogbane, bug orchid and marsh orchid. In addition to the silting up communities and the alluvial forests, the flower-rich dry locations of the Sammern Heath are also considered to be particularly worthy of protection.

As you cross, you'll have a wide view of the water flowing through the floodplain forests, accompanied by the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves.

Dead Tree at Isarmündung

Highlight • Natural Monument

Rotting wood is a habitat for - sometimes extremely rare - insects, which in turn serve as food for other animals.

I was here in winter, but there was no snow. But there were hardly any people in the meadow landscape. Very nice.

Isar oxbow

Highlight • River

After the dike you can see the Isar arm here. It may well be that the way is under water: Here, the Isar gets the place it needs. In case of doubt do not forget rubber boots or enjoy a barefoot nature Kneipp.

Here at the Isaraue you will find different trees, which are divided into hardwood and soft wood. For Weichholzaue belongs the white willow (she really shines silvery), which can stand in the water for almost a third of the year. The thick oak, on the other hand, belongs to the hardwood department. Living rivers need a pronounced hardwood and soft woodland, which are characterized by regular changes of flooding and dry seasons (or high and low water).

The dam broke at this point in 2013 and flooded the entire hinterland, including the villages.
If you stand there and look at the hinterland, then you can't really imagine all the water that flooded the ebb ... glaring

January 18, 2025,Megamarsch-Challenge 2025 Tag 7 - Isarrundweg bei Schiltorn
On the 7th day of the challenge, we walked this wonderful circular hiking trail to the left of the Isar in bright sunshine and blue skies. My conclusion: highly recommended - a pleasant tour.
Unfortunately, no photos today, the camera stopped working 🙂.

Since the weather looked more like rain and wind, today a leisurely walk to the mouth of the Isar in the Danube.
