Hadrian's Library

Highlight • Historical Site

Hadrian's Library dates to the 2nd century AD. The Roman Emperor Hadrian commissioned the library, which was a cultural and educational centre in the heart of ancient Athens.

The library complex included a large rectangular courtyard surrounded by a colonnade, which housed thousands of scrolls and books. It also featured lecture halls and meeting rooms where scholars and philosophers could gather to discuss various topics.

Over the centuries, Hadrian's Library fell into disrepair and only a portion of the library has been excavated and restored. You can explore the ruins, including the beautifully preserved facades and columns. It's a fascinating place to gain insights into the intellectual and cultural life of ancient Athens during the Roman period.

The church of Panagia Pantanassa is located on the square. This church was built as part of a nunnery that once stood on this spot on the square. The name Monastiraki translates as Small Monastery. It is a domed church with rich decorations on the inside. The Tzisdarakis Mosque is also located on this square. This mosque was built during the Ottoman Empire. The mosque was later deconsecrated and turned into a museum. There are a few shops under the old mosque.

Roman Agora, Athens

Highlight • Historical Site

In winter most sites & museums close at 15:00 (Tuesdays closed) and all are half price, so it is cheaper to buy individual tickets as the combination ticket is not reduced in winter. The Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, and Keramikos are almost completely visible from outside the fence even when closed.

Hellenic Parliament Building

Highlight • Monument

King Ludwig I of Bavaria commissioned the building so that his son Otto I and his wife Amalie could move into accommodation in Athens that was appropriate for the royal couple. During a four-year construction phase, the building was built in the neoclassical style by the court architect Friedrich Gärtner from 1834 to 1838. The result was an imposing and at the same time simple-looking ochre-colored building, which stands out not least because of the porch on its main front supported by Doric columns.
The Greek parliament has been meeting in this impressive building since 1935.
