The main line was initially built and operated by the Muldenthal Railway Company, which was taken over by the Saxon state in 1878. Although the Glauchau – Wurzen line had been split in two by a bridge demolition since the Second World War, the line continued to be of great importance. The Glauchau – Großbothen section was leased from the Deutsche Regionalisenbahn (DRE) in 2005 and is currently largely without traffic, the rest of the line to Wurzen has been closed.
