Apedale Road Bothy

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Feels very remote here, but you're not really far away from civilisation. Pick your route. North up a stiff climb to Greets Moss. West on Apedale Road on exquisite gravel. South towards Castle Bolton with a great gravel option leading to the Sweet William Hut & Carperby.

Greets Hill summit cairn

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the summit of Greets Hill, you can see Penhill, Whernside and Buckden Pike - some of the best summits in the Dales. A beautiful view: rest your gear against the cairn, get a good sip of water and enjoy!

Greets Hill

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A great, fast and open bridleway track which drops down to the road above Reeth.

Great fun, and spectacular views!

Grinton Moor

Highlight • Climb

Grinton Moor is a testing 1.9 mile (3 km) climb from Grinton village in the direction of Leyburn. After climbing sharply out of the village, you will gently wind through the stunning moorside. The climb is well-known in the cycling world as it featured in the first stage of the Tour de France in 2014. The average gradient is seven per cent and the road climbs up to 659 feet (200 metres).

How Hush Path

Highlight • Viewpoint

How Hush is one of the most dramatic examples of “hushing” in Swaledale, a technique where miners dammed water high on the moor and then released it in a single violent surge to strip away soil and expose lead veins.

Walking up the hush today feels like moving through a man‑made ravine, its steep, gouged sides showing exactly how powerful those controlled floods were, and how profoundly they reshaped the hillside.

Grinton Lead Smelt Mill

Highlight • Historical Site

This is a ruined lead mining and processing site, here on Cogden Moor. It was built around 1820, and is the best preserved such site in the Dales (which is quite saying something, given that there are a number of such sites in the national park).
