Builth Wells

Highlight • Settlement

The small town in Wales is situated near the river Wye and invites you for a short break. There are some restaurants and if you don’t want to spend too much time, I recommend a stop at the Coop (the supermarket is integrated into a gas station, but has everything you need) followed by a break in the beautiful park, which you can hardly miss, because the cycle path leads right through it.

Builth Bull Statue

Highlight • Structure

This life-size statue of a Welsh Black bull stands near the town's Wye Bridge. Made from bronze, the Builth Bull weighs 1.5 tons and was created by Gavin Fifield, a local sculptor. It was unveiled on 28 November 2005 to coincide with the first day of that year's Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

He had come south to rally the men of the Lordship of Builth in December 1282, as part of a dispute about the ownership of the commote of Arwystli.

In the centre of Builth Wells there is a 1000 feet square mural depicting the final days of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last native Prince of Wales.

St Mary's Church, Builth Wells

Highlight • Religious Site

St Mary's is a pretty church in the heart of Builth Wells. The tower dates to the 14th century and the nave, south aisle and chancel were built in 1875 to replace the former structure. Stained glass in the east wall was created by famed designer Charles Eamer Kempe in 1877. In the porch is the effigy of John Lloyd, ‘squire to the body’ of Elizabeth I.
